BioKinetic has established a new subset of volunteers in our existing database of over 30,000 people
The recruitment team in BioKinetic have been hard at work recently recruiting and building a database of volunteers who are poor metabolizers of drugs. In order to determine if someone is a poor metabolizer, a blood sample was taken and tested for a specific gene, CYP 2D6. The outcome of this test categorizes each volunteer into one of the following:
Extensive metabolizers are the most common, and are the type of people for which drugs are designed. Only circa 7% of Caucasians are poor metabolizers of drugs so finding them can be quite difficult. Having an established database of poor metabolizers will be of value to Sponsors who need to test their drug in this population.
People who cannot metabolize a drug will require a much lower dose than is recommended by the manufacturer, and those who metabolize it quickly may require a higher dose. Some drugs, such as codeine will not be effective in people without the requisite enzymes to activate them.
